Thousands of Verizon customers across California lost service Saturday as part of a nationwide outage affecting more than 23,000 users. The outage began around noon and quickly spread across multiple states, leaving many people unable to make calls or use mobile data.
According to Downdetector, a website on which people can report cell service outages, the number of posted reports peaked in the period slightly after noon, with over 22,000 Verizon users having reported outages. In that period, over 1,300 users in LA had reported outages in Downdetector.
Software Issue Behind the Chaos
In responses to customer complaints on social media, Verizon said it was aware of a “software issue impacting wireless service for some customers.” This technical problem caused phones to display only “SOS mode,” which means users could only make emergency calls.
Nearly 24,000 Verizon customers across the country experienced outages around 2:30 p.m. Saturday as the outage peaked, according to the website Downdetector.com; that number had dropped to about 18,000 about an hour later.

Cities Hit Hardest by the Outage
According to Downdetector, the cities in which Verizon outages have been reported the most include Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Orlando, Tampa, Minneapolis, Miami, Omaha, and Indianapolis. California cities like Los Angeles saw a significant impact, with many residents unable to reach family and friends.
The outage wasn’t limited to California. The disruptions affected large regions across the U.S., including California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, and several other states.
Quick Recovery After Hours of Problems
The good news came later in the day. Verizon customers nationwide regained service Saturday evening after a major outage blamed on a “software issue.” The company worked quickly to fix the problem and restore normal service.
What This Means for Users
Network outages like this show how much we depend on our phones for daily life. When service goes down, it affects work, family communication, and even emergencies. Many people couldn’t use apps, send texts, or make important calls during the outage.

For Verizon customers, this wasn’t the first major issue this year. The company has faced several smaller outages in recent months, raising questions about network reliability.
Tips for Future Outages
When your phone shows “SOS mode,” here are some things you can try:
- Connect to Wi-Fi for internet access
- Use messaging apps that work over Wi-Fi
- Try calling from a landline if available
- Wait for the company to fix the network issue
Software problems can happen to any phone company, but major carriers like Verizon usually fix them within a few hours. The key is staying patient and finding other ways to communicate when needed.
This outage reminds us why it’s good to have backup plans for staying connected during emergencies.
