Apple is planning big changes for the iPhone 17 that could affect users worldwide. The company might remove physical SIM card slots from all iPhone 17 models, not just in the US, where this already happened with the iPhone 14 in 2022.
eSIM-Only Design Coming to More Countries
Apple already removed SIM card slots from iPhones sold in the US starting with the iPhone 14, and this change could now expand to other countries with the iPhone 17. The ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air is especially prone to dropping the physical SIM tray, as internal space is dramatically reduced.
This move makes sense when you look at the numbers. North America is expected to lead eSIM adoption in 2030, with 98 percent of all smartphone connections forecast to use the technology. The US market has demonstrated that people can successfully adapt to eSIM-only phones.
Market Growth Shows Strong eSIM Demand
The eSIM market is growing fast. The global eSIM market was valued at $1.22 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow to $6.29 billion by 2032. Experts predict around 850 million eSIM smartphone connections globally by 2025, growing to 6.7 billion by 2030, which would account for 76% of total smartphone connections.
Over half a billion eSIM shipments were reported in 2024 as consumer adoption continues to surge. This shows that people are getting comfortable with the technology.
New Phone Case Design Expected
Apple is also working on new cases for the iPhone 17. Less of the case will be transparent, with a panel covering most of the back of the phone and hiding the MagSafe connectors, plus a bigger cut-out for the cameras at the top.
The new “TechWoven” cases will have redesigned fabric for greater durability, metallic buttons with improved tactile feedback, a Camera Control button, MagSafe compatibility, and two small holes at the bottom for attaching a crossbody strap.
Why This Change Matters
Going eSIM-only offers several benefits:
- Better Security: eSIMs are harder to remove or steal than physical cards
- More Space: Removing the SIM tray gives Apple more room for other features
- Easy Switching: Users can change carriers through settings without visiting stores

Apple has already sent out invites for an “Awe dropping” event on Tuesday, September 9, at Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California. The iPhone 17 announcement is expected to follow Apple’s usual fall timeline.
For US users, this change won’t be new since they’ve been using eSIM-only iPhones since 2022. But for users in other countries, it could mean adjusting to a new way of managing phone service.
