Check your own syllabus. Grading scales, weightings, rounding rules and attendance minimums are set by each institution and sometimes by each instructor. This calculator applies the common conventions; where your course documents differ, they are the authority.
This is the calculation everyone does badly in their head the week before a final, usually by averaging their current grade with a guess and getting a comfortable answer. The real arithmetic is less comfortable and takes about ten seconds.

The whole thing is one rearrangement. Your current grade only covers part of the course, so it has to be converted into points before anything else makes sense.

The conversion in the second line is the step people skip. A current grade of 87.2% is not 87.2 points towards your final mark — it is 87.2% of the 75 points that have been decided, which is 65.4. Treating it as 87.2 makes every subsequent number wrong in a flattering direction.
Notice also how the final's weight amplifies everything. Dividing by a small weight produces large required scores, which is why a final worth 15% can make a target arithmetically impossible while one worth 40% keeps it comfortably alive.
Worked example one: 87.2% so far, final worth 25%, aiming for 90%. The graded weight is 100 − 25 = 75. The points banked are 87.2 × 75 ÷ 100 = 65.40.
To finish at 90 you need 90 − 65.40 = 24.60 points from a final worth 25. That is 24.60 ÷ 25 × 100 = 98.40%. Reachable in principle, and a very different message from 'you only need to keep doing what you are doing'.
The best possible finish is 65.40 + 25 = 90.40%, so 90% is live by four-tenths of a point. Aiming for 95% would need 118.4%, which is not a study plan — it is arithmetic saying no.
Worked example two: the same student, lower targets. For an 85% finish: 85 − 65.40 = 19.60 points, so 19.60 ÷ 25 × 100 = 78.40% on the final. For 80%: 14.60 points, or 58.40%. For 70%: 4.60 points, a mere 18.40%.
And for 60%, the arithmetic gives 60 − 65.40 = −5.40 points, or −21.6% on the final. A negative requirement means the target is already secured, so rather than printing a score nobody can achieve the calculator reports it as secured — even a zero on the final leaves 65.40%, comfortably above.
That is the most reassuring output this page produces, and it is worth checking for before planning a revision week. Knowing which grades are already banked narrows the question to the ones still genuinely in play.

Three outcomes are possible and each means something different. A required score at or below zero means the grade is secured whatever happens. A score above 100 means it is gone, and no amount of revision changes that. Everything in between is a real target, and the closer it sits to 100 the less margin it leaves.
Treat anything above about 95% as fragile rather than achievable. Needing 98.4% means two careless errors on a hundred-mark paper are enough to miss, and exam performance is not that controllable. It is worth knowing before you build a revision week around it.
The table is more useful than the single answer because it shows the whole landscape at once. Very often the interesting finding is not the target you entered but the one below it — discovering that a B is comfortable at 70.4% while an A− needs 98.4% reframes the week entirely.
Watch the weight of the final rather than just your current grade. A student at 87.2% with a 40%-weighted final needs only 93% for a 90 finish, because there are more points still in play. The same standing with a 15% final would need well over 100%. The weight decides how much of your fate is still open.

Five things worth checking before you trust the number.
Whether the final is cumulative. Some courses replace a poor midterm with the final's score if it is higher, which changes both the weight and the banked points. If that policy exists, model it before using this figure.
Rounding policy. Needing 98.4% for a 90% finish is very different if your institution rounds 89.5 up. Half a point of rounding is often exactly the margin these calculations produce, so it is worth finding out rather than assuming.
Minimum exam requirements. A number of courses require a pass on the final regardless of the weighted total. Under such a rule a comfortable 18.4% requirement is misleading, because the real floor is the department's, not the arithmetic's.
Curves. If the cohort's marks are scaled at the end, your required score moves with everyone else's. It is unknowable in advance and it generally helps rather than hurts, so treat it as unmodelled upside.
Whether the final is the only thing left. This calculation assumes the exam accounts for all the remaining weight. If a final assignment is also outstanding, the two share those points and the required exam score falls — or rises, if the assignment goes badly. Treat the remaining weight as one block only when it really is one.
Where several things remain, the grade calculator handles them as separate components and shows the best and worst finishes across all of them together, which is the more honest picture when the term is not quite over.
Whether the current grade is accurate. Everything here depends on that one input. A grade taken from a course portal partway through marking, or one that excludes a component the syllabus includes, produces a confident answer to the wrong question.
Subtract your banked points from your target and divide by the final's weight. At 87.2% with a 25% final, aiming for 90% needs 24.60 points from 25, which is 98.40%.
Multiply your current grade by the weight already graded, then divide by 100. 87.2% across 75% of the course banks 65.40 points out of 100.
The target is already secured. Even a zero on the final leaves you above it — at 65.40 banked points, any target of 65% or below is safe whatever happens.
The target is out of reach. With 65.40 banked and a 25-point final, the best possible finish is 90.40%, so anything above that cannot be achieved with a perfect paper.
Because your current grade only covers the part of the course that has been marked. 87.2% of 75 points is 65.40 points, not 87.2 — treating it as 87.2 flatters every number that follows.
Enormously. At 87.2% aiming for 90%, a 40%-weighted final needs about 93% while a 25% one needs 98.4%. A heavier final leaves more of the outcome still open.
Treat it as fragile. Needing 98.4% means two careless errors on a hundred-mark paper cost you the grade, and exam performance is rarely that controllable.
Significantly, because these answers often land within half a point of a boundary. If your institution rounds 89.5% up to 90%, the required score drops measurably. Check the policy.
