How to Use the Square Footage Calculator

Square footage is the number every trade asks for and almost nobody measures the same way twice. This calculator handles the five shapes that cover nearly every real room, takes feet and inches as you actually read them off a tape, and converts the result into every unit you are likely to be quoted in.

  1. Pick the shape. Most rooms are rectangles. An L-shape is a rectangle with a corner removed, which is how most kitchens and living rooms actually behave. Circles, triangles and trapezoids cover patios and awkward plots.
  2. Enter feet and inches separately. There is no need to convert 6 inches into 0.5 feet in your head — the inches field does it, and it removes the most common source of error.
  3. Add a quantity if you have several identical spaces. It simply multiplies the result.
  4. Read the unit you were asked for. Flooring is often quoted per square foot, carpet per square yard, and anything outside the United States in square metres. All three are shown together.

The word perpendicular in the triangle and trapezoid formulas is doing real work. The height is the straight-line distance between the base and the opposite point or side, measured at right angles — not the length of a sloping edge. Using a sloping side instead overstates the area, sometimes considerably.

The L-shape method is worth adopting generally. Almost any awkward outline can be handled as a large rectangle with one or more rectangles removed, or as several rectangles added together. It needs no geometry beyond multiplication and it is more reliable than trying to be clever.

Example

Worked example one: a room 15 ft 6 in by 12 ft 3 in. Six inches is 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 feet and three inches is 0.25, so the dimensions are 15.5 by 12.25 feet. The area is 15.5 × 12.25 = 189.875 square feet.

In other units: 189.875 × 0.09290304 = 17.64 square metres, 189.875 ÷ 9 = 21.10 square yards, and 189.875 × 144 = 27,342 square inches. As a fraction of an acre it is 189.875 ÷ 43,560 = 0.004359 — a reminder of how large an acre actually is. At $6.50 a square foot, the flooring for this room costs $1,234.19.

Note what the inches did. Rounding 15 ft 6 in down to 15 feet and 12 ft 3 in down to 12 would give 180 square feet — nearly ten square feet short, and around $64 of flooring not bought.

Worked example two: an L-shaped living room. The overall rectangle is 20 by 15 feet, which is 300 square feet, and a 8 by 6 foot corner is taken out by a staircase. That corner is 48 square feet, so the room is 300 − 48 = 252 square feet.

The same room could be measured as two rectangles instead — 20 by 9 (180 ft²) plus 12 by 6 (72 ft²), giving 252 square feet again. Either method works and they must agree; if they do not, one of the four measurements is wrong, which makes this a genuinely useful way to check yourself.

Which Square Footage Are You Being Asked For?

The first thing to know is that there is no single correct square footage for a house, and this is not a failing of measurement. An estate agent measuring gross external area, a tax assessor measuring heated living space and a flooring supplier measuring what needs covering will produce three different numbers for one building, and all three can be right for their purpose.

For materials, measure what you are covering. Floor area is taken to the inside face of the walls, not to the skirting, since skirting is usually removed or undercut. Built-in cabinets that will not be moved can be deducted; anything free standing cannot.

The acres tile exists because the number surprises people. An acre is 43,560 square feet, roughly the size of an American football field without the end zones, and a large room is barely a two-hundredth of one. Plot sizes quoted in acres and house sizes quoted in square feet are separated by three orders of magnitude.

When a supplier quotes per square yard — common for carpet — divide by nine, not by three. That factor-of-three confusion between linear and square conversions is the same mistake as dividing cubic feet by nine instead of twenty-seven, and it produces an order-three error in exactly the same way.

Five Things Worth Knowing

Five things worth knowing about square footage in practice.

Definitions differ by purpose. Gross external, gross internal and net internal areas are three distinct standards, and property listings do not always say which one they used. A house advertised at 2,000 square feet may have 1,750 you could put furniture in.

Sloped ceilings are treated specially. Many measurement standards count only floor area where the ceiling exceeds a set height — often five or seven feet — which matters enormously in attic conversions and rooms in the roof.

Curved and irregular rooms need breaking up. Approximate a curve as a series of rectangles or as a circle segment, and accept a small error. For material ordering, a slight overestimate is far cheaper than a slight underestimate.

Measure twice, in both directions. Rooms that look rectangular frequently are not: walls bow, corners are not square, and older buildings can be several inches out across a room. Measuring the width at both ends and taking the larger figure is the safe habit when ordering material.

Ceiling height is not part of it. Square footage describes floor area only, which is why two houses of identical square footage can feel entirely different to stand in. A room with a twelve-foot ceiling and one with an eight-foot ceiling measure the same and are not the same room, and no property listing captures that distinction in its headline number.

It also means square footage tells you nothing about paint, which depends on wall area and therefore on height. The two figures answer different questions and neither substitutes for the other.

Inches matter more than they look. Three inches on each dimension of a 15 by 12 room is nearly five square feet — a whole plank of flooring or a meaningful fraction of a tile box. Enter the inches rather than rounding them away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply length by width in feet. A room 15 ft 6 in by 12 ft 3 in is 15.5 × 12.25 = 189.875 square feet — enter the inches separately rather than rounding them.

Multiply by 0.09290304. So 189.875 ft² is 17.64 m². To go the other way, multiply square metres by 10.7639.

Nine, because a yard is three feet and three squared is nine. Dividing by three instead is a common and costly error when carpet is quoted per square yard.

Take the full rectangle and subtract the missing corner, or split it into two rectangles and add them. Both methods must agree — if they do not, one measurement is wrong.

43,560. A 189.875 ft² room is about a two-hundred-and-thirtieth of one, which is a useful reminder of the scale difference between rooms and plots.

To the wall face for flooring, since skirting is normally removed or undercut and the floor runs beneath it. For paint, the wall face is what you are covering anyway.

Because listings use different standards — gross external, gross internal or net internal — and rarely say which. The difference between them on a typical house runs to hundreds of square feet.

Area is π times the radius squared, and the radius is half the diameter. A 14-foot circle is π × 7² = 153.94 square feet.

The perpendicular height — the straight-line distance from the base to the opposite point at right angles. Using a sloping side instead overstates the area.

Under most measurement standards, only where the ceiling exceeds a set height, often five or seven feet. It makes a large difference in attic rooms and loft conversions.
