Check your own syllabus. Grading scales, weightings, rounding rules and attendance minimums are set by each institution and sometimes by each instructor. This calculator applies the common conventions; where your course documents differ, they are the authority.

How to Use the Grade Calculator

A course grade is a weighted average, and the weights are usually printed in the syllabus on the first day and never looked at again. Putting them in once tells you not just where you stand but how much of the course is still yours to influence.

  1. List your scores as percentages. Separate them with commas, spaces or new lines. If an assignment was marked out of 40 and you got 34, enter 85 rather than 34.
  2. List the weights in the same order. These come from the syllabus, as shares of the whole course. Four components weighted 20, 15, 25 and 15 add up to 75% of the course.
  3. Leave out anything not yet graded. The calculator works out the remaining weight itself and shows you the best and worst finishes still reachable.
  4. Read the current grade against the banked points. The percentage is your standing among what has been marked; the banked points are what you actually hold out of a hundred.

Weighted Grade Formula

Two divisions, and the difference between them is the difference between a reassuring number and a useful one.

The current grade divides by the graded weight, so it answers the question 'how am I doing on what has been marked'. The banked-points figure divides by 100 instead, so it answers 'what do I actually hold'. Early in a term those two numbers are wildly different, and confusing them is how people are surprised in December.

The best and worst finishes come straight out of the remaining weight. Everything ungraded is worth exactly its weight in points, so a perfect run adds all of it and a complete collapse adds none. The true answer is always somewhere between those two, and the band narrows as the term goes on.

Example

Worked example one: four components graded, one to go. Homework 88% at weight 20, quizzes 92% at 15, midterm 79% at 25, project 95% at 15. The weighted sum is 88×20 + 92×15 + 79×25 + 95×15 = 1,760 + 1,380 + 1,975 + 1,425 = 6,540.

The graded weight is 20 + 15 + 25 + 15 = 75, so the current grade is 6,540 ÷ 75 = 87.20% — a B+ on the usual bands. The points banked are 6,540 ÷ 100 = 65.40 out of a hundred, from 75% of the course.

That leaves 25 points still available. The best possible finish is 65.40 + 25 = 90.40%, an A−; the worst is 65.40% with a zero on the final, which is still a D. The whole outcome now lives in a 25-point band.

Worked example two: what the midterm actually cost. That 79% on a 25-weight midterm banked 79 × 25 ÷ 100 = 19.75 points out of a possible 25, losing 5.25. Had it been a 90%, the weighted sum would be 6,540 + (11×25) = 6,815, the current grade 90.87%, and the banked points 68.15.

Compare that with the project, where 95% on a weight of 15 lost only 0.75 points. The midterm was seven times more damaging than the project was helpful, purely because of its weight — which is the argument for reading the syllabus before deciding where to put your effort rather than after.

Standing, Banked Points and the Band Between

The two headline numbers answer different questions and both are worth reading. 87.20% is how you are performing; 65.40 banked points is what you own. Halfway through a course those diverge sharply, and the second number is the one that determines whether a target is still reachable.

The band between the best and worst finishes is a measure of how much control you still have. Twenty-five points of spread is a lot — the difference between an A− and a D — and it narrows every time something is marked. Once the band is only a few points wide, the outcome is essentially decided.

Points lost is the most actionable column in the table. It ranks your components by damage done rather than by score, and the ranking is often surprising: a 79% on a heavy midterm costs seven times what a 95% on a light project gains. Effort follows weight, not difficulty.

One caution about the letter band. The boundaries used here are the common American convention, and plenty of institutions differ — some use 45% as a pass, some round 89.5% up and some do not round at all. The percentage is the reliable output; the letter is a convenience.

Five Things a Syllabus Adds

Five things that make a syllabus grade differ from this one.

Dropped scores. Many courses drop the lowest quiz or homework mark, which changes both the scores and the effective weights. Work out the surviving set first and enter that, rather than everything you were ever given.

Curves and scaling. A curve applied at the end can move every grade in a cohort, and no calculation from raw scores will predict it. Treat a curve as unknowable upside rather than as something to plan around.

Rounding. Whether 89.5% becomes an A− is a policy question, and institutions genuinely split on it. Half a point is worth knowing about in advance, because it is exactly the margin these calculations tend to land on.

Extra credit. It can push banked points above what the weights alone allow, which means a best-possible finish above 100% is occasionally real. If your course offers it, add it as an extra component with its own small weight.

Late penalties. A percentage deducted per day late is applied to the component score before weighting, so a 95% project marked down 10% for lateness enters as 85 rather than reducing your overall grade by ten points. Enter the score after the penalty, not before.

The same applies to any capped resubmission. If a retaken assignment is capped at 60%, enter 60 — the cap belongs to the component, and folding it into the final grade instead overstates the damage considerably.

Hard requirements. Some courses require a minimum on the final exam, or attendance above a threshold, regardless of the weighted total. Those gates sit outside the arithmetic entirely, and passing on points while failing a gate is a genuinely common surprise.

Anywhere between your banked points and your banked points plus the remaining weight. With 65.40 banked and 25 still open, the range runs from 65.40% to 90.40%.

The one with the largest points lost, not the lowest score. A 79% on a 25-weight midterm lost 5.25 points; a 95% on a 15-weight project lost only 0.75.

Work out which marks survive the drop policy and enter only those. Dropping the lowest quiz changes both the scores and the effective weight of the quiz category.

The bands here are the common American convention — 93 for an A, 90 for an A−, 87 for a B+ and so on. Plenty of institutions differ, so treat the percentage as the reliable output.
