Body mass index divides weight by the square of height. Adolphe Quetelet published the ratio in 1832 as a way to describe populations; Ancel Keys renamed it BMI in 1972 after finding it tracked body fatness better than the other simple indices available at the time.

BMI prime is the same number expressed as a fraction of the upper healthy limit. A prime of 1.00 sits exactly on 25; 1.20 means you are 20% above the top of the healthy band. It travels well between the WHO and Asia-Pacific scales because it is a ratio rather than a raw value.

The two cases land close together for a reason: 185 lb at 5 ft 10 in is 83.9 kg at 1.778 m, and 83.9 ÷ 1.778² = 26.5. The imperial formula is the metric one wearing a different hat.
The World Health Organization's international cut-offs are the ones most clinics print on a chart. They apply to adults of 20 and over, and they are the same for men and women.

The WHO also publishes lower thresholds for many Asian populations, because cardiometabolic risk tends to appear at a lower BMI. On that Asia-Pacific scale the healthy band ends at 22.9, overweight runs from 23.0 to 24.9, and obesity starts at 25.0. Someone at 1.72 m and 69.2 kg has a BMI of 23.4: comfortably healthy on the international chart, already overweight on the Asia-Pacific one. That is why the calculator shows both.
Children and teenagers are a separate case entirely. Their BMI is compared against age-and-sex percentile charts rather than fixed numbers, because a healthy 12-year-old and a healthy 17-year-old have very different body compositions. Use a paediatric growth chart for anyone under 20, not the table above.
BMI is a screening ratio, not a measurement of body fat. It cannot tell muscle from fat, it ignores where fat sits, and it was built from population data rather than individual physiology. Four situations where it misleads:
Two cheap measurements fix most of this. Waist circumference — measured at the midpoint between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone — is a better single predictor of metabolic risk than BMI, with common warning thresholds around 94 cm for men and 80 cm for women. Waist-to-height ratio is even simpler: keep your waist under half your height. Pair either with BMI and you get a far more honest picture than BMI alone.
The most common mistakes we see are entering height in centimetres while the metric toggle expects metres elsewhere, weighing at wildly different times of day, and treating a one-point move as progress. BMI is a slow number. Compare it month to month, not morning to morning, and use the body fat calculator alongside it if you want a composition estimate rather than a weight-for-height ratio.
A BMI of 27 sits in the overweight band, about two points above the healthy ceiling of 24.9. On its own it is a mild signal, not a diagnosis. If your waist is under half your height, your blood pressure and blood sugar are normal and you train regularly, a 27 may simply reflect muscle. If your waist is large and you are inactive, it is worth acting on.
The same as for a man: 18.5 to 24.9 on the WHO scale. BMI does not use sex, even though women naturally carry more essential body fat than men at the same BMI. That is one of the reasons body fat percentage, which does use sex, often gives a more useful answer for women than BMI does.
Because BMI only knows your total mass. Skeletal muscle is roughly 15% denser than fat, so adding 8 kg of muscle raises BMI by about 2.8 points at average height while lowering your body fat percentage. Athletes are the single largest group BMI misclassifies. Use body fat percentage or waist measurement instead.
In metric, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared: 68 kg at 1.75 m is 68 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.2. In imperial, multiply weight in pounds by 703 and divide by height in inches squared: 150 lb at 66 in is (703 × 150) ÷ 4,356 = 24.2.
Multiply your height in metres squared by 18.5 for the bottom of the healthy band and by 24.9 for the top. At 1.75 m that is 56.7 kg to 76.3 kg — a 20 kg window, which is wider than most people expect. The calculator prints this range for your exact height in the first result tile.
Not with these cut-offs. For anyone under 20, BMI is plotted on a percentile chart for their age and sex, because normal body composition changes rapidly through growth. A child at the 85th percentile is considered overweight for their age regardless of what the adult table says.
Large cohort studies found that people of South and East Asian descent tend to develop type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at lower BMIs than European populations, partly because of a higher proportion of visceral fat at the same weight. The WHO therefore recommends acting from 23.0 rather than 25.0 in those groups.
One BMI point equals your height in metres squared, in kilograms. At 1.70 m that is 2.89 kg per point; at 1.85 m it is 3.42 kg. So dropping from 27.0 to 24.9 at 1.70 m means losing about 6 kg. The second result tile does this arithmetic for you.
Yes, as a first-pass screening tool, because it needs only a scale and a tape measure. Most clinical guidelines now pair it with waist circumference, blood pressure and blood glucose rather than treating it as a standalone verdict. Several bodies have formally recommended against using BMI alone to judge an individual.
