How to Use the Flooring Calculator

Flooring is sold in whole boxes and laid with a saw, so the number you buy is never the number your room measures. This calculator adds the waste your layout actually generates, rounds up to boxes, and then shows you exactly how much of that last box you are paying to keep in the garage.

  1. Measure the room. Length by width, to the inside face of the walls. Skirting boards will be removed or undercut, so measure to the plaster rather than to the trim.
  2. Enter the coverage of one box. This is printed on every box and it is not standard — 22 to 24 square feet is typical for laminate, but wide-plank and engineered products vary widely.
  3. Pick the layout. A straight lay in a simple rectangle wastes about 8%; an offset pattern 10%; diagonal 15%; herringbone 20%. The waste field follows your choice unless you override it.
  4. Read the leftover figure. It tells you what the final box buys. Keeping a few square feet back for future repairs is sensible; keeping a whole unopened box is money resting on a shelf.

Buy it all at once. Flooring is manufactured in batches and colour varies between them. A box bought three months later can be visibly different from the rest of the floor, which is the strongest argument for buying the spare box now rather than when you need it.

The waste percentages are not arbitrary. A straight lay in a plain rectangle cuts one board at the end of each row and the offcut usually starts the next row, so very little is genuinely lost. A diagonal lay cuts both ends of almost every board at an angle, and those offcuts rarely fit anywhere else.

Herringbone is the extreme case at 20%, because every single piece is cut to length and the pattern dictates exactly where each one goes. There is no such thing as an offcut that happens to fit.

Example

Worked example one: a 20 ft by 15 ft room, offset lay. The floor area is 300 square feet. The offset allowance of 10% takes that to 300 × 1.10 = 330 square feet. At 22.5 square feet a box, that is 330 ÷ 22.5 = 14.67 boxes, which rounds to 15 boxes.

Fifteen boxes cover 15 × 22.5 = 337.5 square feet, so after laying 300 square feet you have 37.5 square feet spare — 12.5% of the floor, or one and two-thirds boxes. At $45 a box the material costs 15 × 45 = $675, which is $2.25 per square foot of floor actually laid, against a shelf price of $2.00 per square foot.

That gap between $2.00 and $2.25 is the real cost of flooring and it is invisible on the price tag. Twelve and a half per cent is what the box rounding and the waste allowance together add to the headline price.

Worked example two: the same room laid diagonally. Nothing about the room changes, but the allowance rises from 10% to 15%. That gives 300 × 1.15 = 345 square feet, and 345 ÷ 22.5 = 15.33 boxes — 16 boxes.

One extra box is $45, or 6.7% more, purely for turning the planks forty-five degrees. Herringbone at 20% gives 360 square feet and exactly 16 boxes as well, so in this particular room the diagonal and herringbone layouts cost the same — the rounding to whole boxes absorbs the difference. That will not be true in every room, which is why the arithmetic is worth doing rather than assuming.

Reading the Leftover and the Real Price

Read the leftover figure first, because it tells you whether the last box was worth buying. Somewhere between five and fifteen square feet spare is ideal — enough to replace a damaged plank or two without storing a pallet. Much more than that and you have over-ordered; much less and a single accident means hunting for a matching batch.

The cost-per-square-foot tile is the honest price. A floor advertised at $2.00 a square foot costs $2.25 by the time waste and box rounding are counted, and that is before underlay, trim or fitting. Comparing two products on shelf price alone is comparing the wrong number, particularly when their box sizes differ.

Rooms are rarely square, and that is where the allowance earns its keep. Alcoves, bay windows, door thresholds, chimney breasts and anything with a curve all generate cuts that produce unusable offcuts. If your room has more than two or three such features, add five points to whatever the layout suggests.

Where a floor runs through a doorway into a hall, measure the two areas as one floor rather than two rooms. Continuous flooring means offcuts from one space can start rows in the next, which genuinely reduces waste — the opposite is true if you buy separately and lay separately.

Five Things That Change the Box Count

Five things that change the box count after the arithmetic is done.

Dye lots. Flooring is produced in batches and colour shifts between them, sometimes subtly and sometimes obviously. Buying the whole job in one purchase, from one retailer, with matching batch numbers on the boxes, is the only reliable defence — and it is why the spare box should be bought now.

Damaged boards in the box. A small proportion of planks arrive chipped, warped or with printing defects, and manufacturers expect this. The waste allowance is partly there to cover it, which is one reason not to run the allowance down to zero on a small room.

Plank length against room length. If your room length divides nearly evenly by the plank length, the offcut at the end of each row is tiny and unusable — the worst case. If it divides at around a half or a third, the offcut starts the next row and waste is minimal. This effect is real and it is why two rooms of the same area can waste different amounts.

Expansion gaps. Floating floors need a gap of roughly a quarter to a half inch around the perimeter, covered by skirting or beading. It does not change the material needed in any meaningful way, but forgetting it entirely causes the floor to buckle in summer.

Underlay is a separate calculation. It is sold by the roll in square feet and needs no waste allowance to speak of, since it is cut to fit with almost nothing lost. Use the plain floor area for underlay, not the padded figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a 20 by 15 room with a 10% allowance and 22.5 ft² boxes, fifteen boxes. That covers 337.5 ft² against a floor of 300 ft², leaving 37.5 ft² spare.

Eight per cent for a straight lay in a simple room, 10% for an offset pattern, 15% for diagonal and 20% for herringbone. Add five points for a room with several alcoves or angles.

Because both ends of nearly every board are cut at an angle, and angled offcuts rarely fit anywhere else in the room. A straight lay reuses most end cuts to start the next row.

To the wall face. Skirting is usually removed and refitted over the flooring, or undercut so the planks slide beneath it, so the floor genuinely runs the full width.

Yes. Alcoves, bays, chimney breasts and thresholds all create cuts whose offcuts cannot be reused. More than two or three such features justifies adding five points to the allowance.

If the floor runs continuously through the doorway, yes — offcuts from one space start rows in the next. Calculating them separately overstates the total.
