A roof is bigger than the building it sits on, and the steeper it is the bigger it gets. The pitch multiplier is the entire trick here: it converts the footprint you can measure from the ground into the sloped area you actually have to cover.

This is a materials estimate. Roof structure, ventilation, ice barrier requirements and flashing details are all governed by building code and vary by region. Measuring a roof from the ground is safe; working on one is not, and a licensed roofer should price anything beyond a small repair.
One right-angled triangle does all the work. A roof rising 6 inches for every 12 of run is the hypotenuse of a 6-12 triangle, and that hypotenuse is longer than the run beneath it by a fixed ratio.

The multiplier grows slowly at first and then quickly. A shallow 4/12 pitch adds only 5.4% to the footprint; a 6/12 adds 11.8%; a 12/12 — a full forty-five degrees — adds 41.4%. Anyone estimating a steep roof from its footprint alone is short by nearly half.
This method assumes a simple gable, where every square foot of footprint has exactly one square foot of roof above it. Hip roofs work out the same way in total area, which surprises people, but they generate far more cut waste because every hip and valley is a diagonal cut through full shingles.
Worked example one: a 40 ft by 30 ft building with a 6/12 pitch. The footprint is 1,200 square feet. The multiplier is √(1 + (6 ÷ 12)²) = √(1 + 0.25) = √1.25 = 1.118034. The true roof area is 1,200 × 1.118034 = 1,341.64 square feet, which is 13.42 squares.
Adding 10% for waste gives 14.76 squares, so you buy 15 squares. That is 15 × 3 = 45 bundles of shingles and 15 ÷ 4 = 3.75, so 4 rolls of underlayment. At $450 a square installed, the job comes to $6,750.
Notice how much the multiplier adds: 141.64 square feet, or 11.8% more roof than the plan view suggests. On this job that is one and a half extra squares — around $675 at the quoted rate, and the single most common omission in a rough estimate.
Worked example two: the same building, steeper. At a 10/12 pitch the multiplier becomes √(1 + (10 ÷ 12)²) = √1.694444 = 1.301708. The roof area rises to 1,200 × 1.301708 = 1,562.05 square feet, or 15.62 squares.
With 10% waste that is 17.18, so 18 squares — three more than the 6/12 version, and $1,350 more material on an identical building. A steeper roof also costs more to install per square, because it needs staging and slows the crew down, so the real gap is wider than the material figure alone.

The multiplier tile is the one to look at, because it is the figure that separates a real estimate from a guess. If it reads 1.118, your roof is 11.8% larger than the building beneath it, and every material quantity on the page inherits that.
Waste depends on complexity far more than on size. A plain gable roof with two planes wastes very little — ten per cent is generous. A hip roof with valleys, two dormers and three penetrations wastes fifteen to twenty, because every hip and valley means cutting full shingles diagonally and discarding the offcuts.
Bundles are how the material arrives and squares are how it is priced, so both figures matter at different moments. Three bundles to a square is the near-universal convention for standard architectural shingles, but heavyweight and designer products run four or five bundles, which changes the delivery and the labour more than the cost.
Underlayment at four squares a roll is a synthetic-underlayment figure. Traditional fifteen-pound felt covers about four squares a roll too, thirty-pound about two. Check the roll before ordering, because getting this wrong strands a crew halfway through a dry-in.
The material cost tile deliberately takes a price per square, because that is how roofing is quoted. If your figure includes labour, the tile is your whole job; if it is materials only, expect labour to roughly double it on a simple roof and more than that on a steep or complex one.
Five things this estimate does not cover.
Ridge, hip and starter courses. Ridge caps are sold separately by the linear foot, as are starter strips along the eaves. On a simple gable that is perhaps forty feet of ridge and eighty of starter, and neither is included in the square count here.
Flashing and penetrations. Chimneys, vent pipes, skylights and wall abutments all need flashing, and each one is a detail that leaks if done badly. They add cost, and they add waste, because shingles must be cut around them.
Ice and water barrier. Most cold-climate codes require a self-adhering membrane along the eaves, typically extending two feet inside the exterior wall line. It is a separate material with its own coverage and its own price, and it is not optional where it is required.
Tear-off and disposal. Removing the existing roof and skipping it is often a fifth of the job cost. Old shingles are heavy — a square of three-tab weighs around 230 lb — so a 15-square roof produces well over a ton and a half of waste before the new material arrives.
Deck condition. Nobody knows what the sheathing looks like until the old roof comes off, and rotten boards are common around valleys and penetrations. Most contracts price replacement sheets separately for exactly this reason, and a contingency of five to ten per cent on the total is prudent.
Multiply the footprint by the pitch multiplier, which is √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²). A 1,200 ft² footprint at 6/12 gives 1,200 × 1.118034 = 1,341.64 ft².
One hundred square feet of roof surface. It is the unit almost all roofing material and labour is priced in, and a 1,341.64 ft² roof is 13.42 squares.

Hold a level horizontally against the roof line and measure the vertical drop at 12 inches along it. That drop in inches is the rise, and the pitch is written as that number in 12.

The total area is the same for the same footprint and pitch, but a hip roof wastes considerably more in cuts. Allow a higher waste percentage rather than a larger area.
